What is a fraternity?

Fraternity - From the Latin word, "frater," which means, "brother," a fraternity is a formal organization created around a set of core values and traditions. The most common connotation of a fraternity is a social fraternity, which are almost always exclusively male (their co-ed counterpart being sororities). Fraternities can also be established based upon ethnicity, scholarship and honors, or public service.

Greek Council History

In the Monday, October 16, 2000 issue of TechNews, the Greek Council President at the time, Pat Wagstrom, was featured in an article on Greek Life. He is a Delt and a Computer Engineering major originally from St. Paul, Minnesota.  His advice to students, "Your classes aren't as important as you think they are. Get involved, don't let classes get in the way of getting involved and doing what you like to do.  Talk to people, find people who have similar interests, and if there are none, start a student organization." His favorite part about Greek Council? "I like helping out the Greek Community as a whole."

IIT named Top 10 College that get Greek Life right!

"IIT is another school where Greek life is different than that of many other schools and doesn’t follow the party-centric stereotype presented by TV and movies. Students at IIT do enjoy socializing, but groups are also highly focused on scholastic achievement, community service projects, and intramural sports. Additionally, Greek groups on campus provide opportunities for members and non-members alike to boost leaderships skills, helping students become leaders in science, technology, engineering, and architecture through special courses and networking events. Some students even report their Greek houses as being excellent places to do homework, study, and get help from their peers."

So proud of our community! Let's share this with all of IIT and show them what we are all about! Congrats!

Greek Reps from Spring 2012!

Once Upon a Time...

Since this is the first post of the year, I figured why not start out with a fairy tale beginning?  You only get one start, so why not make it the best! So here we go...

Greek Council presents "It's all Greek to me!", the blog where all things Greek will be discussed whether IIT related or other.  Things to look out for:

-updates on events from Greek Council and chapters!
-features on Greek members of all chapters.
-information regarding Greek life at IIT and beyond.
-pictures and more pictures.

If you or any one in your chapter would like to contribute to the blog, please contact me (Miriam Schmid) at vp.community@iitgreek.com. Some potential topics to address:

Why did I join Greek life?
How has being a Greek helped me grow as a person?
My proudest moment being a member of my chapter was...
One thing I wish I would have known as a new member is...

Thank you for reading...come back soon!
